The mission of The Holmes Foundation is to ensure that all residential renovation and construction in Canada is done right – the first time – and to improve the image of pursuing a career in the skilled trades. We’re helping achieve this by making sure the right people get access to the right education.
Skilled trades shape the world around us – literally. Today, nearly 3.8 million Canadians work in skilled trades based industries, making skilled trades workers key drivers of the Canadian economy. Unfortunately, not enough new skilled trades workers are entering the industry to replace the older generation that will be retiring within the next few years. As a result, it’s estimated that by 2020 Canada could be short approximately 1 million skilled trades workers.
This shortage will be devastating to Canadian infrastructure projects, causing major delays in the construction of roads, hospitals, schools and new developments in growing communities. A rapid decline in skilled trades workers will also affect the number of unskilled workers taking their place as desperate companies struggle to find people to complete projects. By contributing to The Holmes Foundation, you help counter the impact this shortage will have on our economy, our communities and the safety of our structures. You also help better educate those already working within the renovation and construction industry in order to better protect consumers, homeowners and residents.
The Holmes Foundation is a charitable foundation that supports the training of youth in the skilled trades, through apprenticeships, scholarships and bursaries.In Canada there is a desperate --and growing--shortage of skilled workers, and unless youth are encouraged to enter this employment field, all homeowners are making themselves increasingly vulnerable to unscrupulous contractors in the future. Spending on home renovations in Canada has exceeded $2.5 billion per month, and 65% of Canadian homeowners plan to renovate their homes in next 12 months.
But without skilled trades people to supply this demand there will be long waits for help and plenty of incentive for incompetent and unethical contractors to stay in business.

1:00 pm - Conclusion. Mike and crew leave.
